also, i think those Chinese people who brought Reggae came over on a boat with some Mormons. ;)
The new Special Ed CD is spectacularly bad though.
I know many of us white Americans have fucked up ideas of black authenticity but how on earth does that writer make the jump that white america sees lil jon as representing any sort of "authentic" blackness? If anything, 2pac is what white america sees as "authentic" blackness when it comes to rap music.
Mark Anthony Neal's personal distaste of the "pimpisms" of Lil' John have caused him to overreach this time. He's forgotten that our gift of style is a double edged sword...Black folk can make the most unsavory elements of our human existence stylish and inviting.
sexism, materialism, violence, homophobia... i think you might be onto something Ronnie.

I didn't try to hock your book, Jeff. I don't live in Opa-Locka, I live on the Beach.
well, the link explains it all. hey ms. Beach, i'm not trying to stop you from paying your bills, i certainly know how it is, but please don't advertise a rough galley as a finished paperback. that thing doesn't come out for a while. peace and a thank you from the author.
oops, i didn't mean to delete my comment...Jeff, can it be recovered?
how'd you do that? i think you mean this one right?
"sexism, materialism and violence are common to humanity in general...i'm not singling out Hip-Hop for any specfic condemnation."-ronnie brown
yeah Jeff, that's the one...out of curiosity, i clicked the trash can icon at the bottom of my comment and it erased the post...yikes!
LOL. curiousity killed the post. let me go find out more about those crazy icons...
Jeff, it was a joke! Some people often make the mistake that I'm a Ms., though, because of my name. (Some people also think I'm a white woman.) Another hint: I'm a Soundings expatriate...
At any rate, I am eagerly awaiting the release of your book. Peace.

oh you punk! you owe me a cuban sammich. coming back soon?
Hmm...good question. I'd like to think so, although my survival skills may dictate otherwise. I check out your site regularly...glad to see that the Bay Area is back on the rise, yo.
I will send you a ham and cheese Cuban sandwich and a cup of cafecito via mail. Or maybe I'll send you a coupon for both redeemable at the Latin Cafe.
